 Closed Rings for Making Dorset Buttons, sizes 10mm - 50mm

Dorset buttons are generally made by stitching round a closed metal ring and we have several sizes of  closed ring for button making. They are strong and smooth, perfect for making Dorset buttons, or any other craft requiring a closed ring. (Always wash Dorset buttons first before attaching to a garment or project, to ensure dye fastness). They are made from zinc alloy. Each ring is between 1 - 5mm across (the smaller ones are thinner, the larger ones are thicker). They have rounded edges. Please note the size is measured from outside edge to outside edge. We buy them in at a specific size but they can differ by as much as 1mm from the stated size. If you need exact perfectly presise measurement please contact us first. Please also take into account that the thread will increase the size of your button.

Here at Beaker Button we're passionate about the fabulous craft of Dorset button making. Dorset buttons were stitched by hand in Dorset from the early 1600's to 1851. They were shipped all over the world and were even worn by royalty. This cottage industry employed over 4000 people at its height, making over 100 different Dorset button types, all in white linen. Their popularity died overnight after the Great Exhibition of 1851, when a new button machine was showcased. Many families were left destitute and emigrated to escape starvation, and the art was more or less lost. The W.I., the Arts and Crafts movement and others have kept this fabulous craft alive and now you can learn how to make them too.
